Resolution 2005-4

A Resolution in Celebration of the Centennial of Lutheran Campus Ministry

Purpose:           To celebrate the centennial of Lutheran campus ministry in the United States, and to pledge the continuing support of the Lutheran Student Movement—USA for campus ministry particularly by advocating for it within the larger Church.

Whereas,         members of Lutheran Student Movement-USA are active in Lutheran Campus Ministry at more than 160 college and university campuses;

Whereas,         LSM-USA members serve as leaders in Lutheran churches and on college and university campuses, enriching the world by responding to God’s call;

Whereas,         LSM-USA and Lutheran Campus Ministry play a key role in developing lay and rostered leaders who advance the mission of the church;

Whereas,         in the year 2007, Lutheran Campus Ministry celebrates its 100th Anniversary of providing worshiping communities on college and university campuses across the United States;

Whereas,         operation of Lutheran Campus Ministry depends primarily on synod and church-wide support, which in many places is diminishing;

Whereas,         campus ministry staff are increasingly forced to choose between contact ministry with students and time spent fundraising;

Whereas,         most financial support for Lutheran Campus Ministry will be determined at upcoming synod and church-wide assemblies;

Therefore be it resolved that:

1. LSM-USA gratefully acknowledges the 100th Anniversary of Lutheran Campus Ministry’s faithful proclamation of the Gospel to college communities; and

2.  LSM-USA encourages its Regional Councils to work with local campus ministries to seek recognition of the Centennial of Lutheran Campus Ministry at ELCA Synodical and church-wide assemblies by:

A.  Requesting each synod in their region to give time and attention to the Lutheran Campus Ministry Centennial at each 2006 synod assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; and

B. Introducing resolutions to the 2006 synod assemblies, requesting an increase in financial commitments to Lutheran Campus Ministry; and

C. Strongly recommending that each synod submit a memorial to 2007 church-wide assembly in support of Lutheran Campus Ministry.
