Resolution 2005-2

A Resolution on Executive Council Election Forums

Purpose:           To reform the election process for the national officers of the Lutheran Student Movement—USA by adding a pre-election forum with the candidates in order to allow for greater familiarity with the candidates on the part of LSM-USA voting members.

Whereas,          many students present at Lutheran Student Movement-USA national gatherings are new to national LSM-USA national events;

Whereas,          students with years of national LSM-USA involvement have little access to the knowledge of the happenings at the national level in the past years;

Whereas,          in order to make an informed decision about future leaders of LSM-USA, students need to have an opportunity to question prospective LSM-USA Executive Council candidates;

Whereas,          LSM-USA voters only get a 5-minute limited view of the candidate to be voted on;

Whereas,          in almost all other election systems an opportunity exists for voters to speak with candidates on issues of importance.

Therefore be it resolved that:

1.      LSM-USA shall host a public forum for voters and candidates at least 24 hours before each LSM-USA executive council election,

2.      The public forum provide an opportunity for students to question the candidates on issues of importance and happenings of past years of LSM service,

3.      It is strongly recommended that candidates for LSM-USA executive council positions be present for the duration of the public forum.
