Regional Concern - Inclusive Terms into Everyday Language

Background

In an effort to encourage the use of inclusive language among the communities in which we live, the Rocky Mountain Region of LSM-USA has taken an active role to alter dialogue to provide a welcoming and affirming environment for all as suggested by LSM-USA Resolution 76-3.

The use of inclusive language should extend past gender terminology to recognize differences in language usage among all groups of people. This interest preserves the value in linguistic differences among regions while providing a mechanism to encourage participation without fear of ridicule and social ostracism.  The use of inclusive language in the Rocky Mountain Region has reduced tension within the community and it has facilitated an environment of compassion for all people.

Therefore BE IT RESOLVED

That we encourage other regions and groups of LSM-USA to:

  1. make an effort to introduce inclusive terms into everyday language.  One introductory term that the Rocky Mountain Region recommends is the use of RCB, an acronym for Refreshing Carbonated Beverage.  The use of this inclusive term breaks down any barriers that may exist between groups because of the more common terms such as soda, pop, or coke.
  2. encourage local ministries, churches, and other organizations to facilitate the use of inclusive language into all aspects of daily operations.
