A resolution to
support the Jubilee 2000 USA Movement.
WHEREAS, the ELCA Churchwide Assembly has passed a memorial in support of the Jubilee 2000 USA Campaign.
WHEREAS, the ELCA has issued a social statement, "Sufficient, Sustainable Livelihood for All," and the issue was amended and adopted by more than two-thirds majority at the sixth biennial Churchwide Assembly, August 20, 1999, in Denver, Colorado; and (http://www.elca.org/dcs/economiclife.html)
WHEREAS, Bill HR 1095, the "Debt Relief for Poverty Reduction Act of 1999" is before the House of Representatives of the United States of America; and (http://www.loRa.orR/JubileeAlert.htm)
WHEREAS, Bill S 1690, the "Debt Relief for Poor Countries Act"--Outlined in the LOGA report, "Congress Should Fund Deeper Debt Relief for Poor Nations"; and (http://www.loga.org/JubileeAlert.htm)
WHEREAS, Bishop Anderson of the ELCA, signed a letter in Support of HR 1095, asking for the endorsement of organizations to participate actively in a campaign to pass the legislation. (http://www.loga.org/JubAprl2LTTR.htm)
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that:
We the students of the Lutheran Student Movement-USA support the efforts of the Jubilee 2000/USA Campaign;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we the students of the Lutheran Student Movement-USA urge our Congresspeople to support HR 1095, the "Debt Relief for Poverty Reduction Act of 1990," and S 1690, the "Debt Relief for Poor Countries Act," by writing a letter of support. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to the ELCA, LOGA, Jubilee 2000/USA, and The President of the United States of America.
