1993 Approved Legislation #2 (93-2)

A Resolution Concerning Civil Rights

 

Whereas it is the stated purpose of LSM-USA

to communicate with fellow Christians in ecumenical concerns, and to provide opportunities for encounter with and witness to non-Christian persons and groups, (LSM-USA Constitution Article II, ¶D.) and

 

Whereas it is the further stated purpose of LSM-USA

to provide a well-developed program of ...action, which program shall provide for the expression of fellowship in Christ and of the social and intellectual concerns of campuses, of communities and of the entire world, (LSM-USA Constitution Article II, 4D.) and

 

Whereas at the 1991-1992 LSM-USA National Gathering, this very body stood resolved that the Lutheran Student Movement affirms that Gay and Lesbian people share with others the worth that comes from being unique individuals created by God, (Affirmation of Welcome) and

 

Whereas Constitutional amendments which allow discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation are being considered by several states and these are inconsistent with the expressed purposes of LSM-USA,

 

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Lutheran Student Movement opposes and will take a stand against acts which deny, prevent, or limit any person from obtaining or maintaining employment, housing or public accommodations for arbitrary reasons such as race, gender, disability, nationality, marital of familial status, military status, sexual orientation or political affiliation.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Lutheran Student Movement shall refrain from business dealing with agencies or businesses which pursue bigoted, discriminatory. hiring practices.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this legislation be sent to media source, in states considering discriminating legislation, legislative bodies within those states, the church leaders of national and synodical Lutheran bodies, those businesses with whom business dealings are currently conducted and all businesses with whom future dealing are considered, and organizations struggling to ensure legal protection for everyone.
