1992 Approved Resolution #1
AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE VI OF THE LSM-USA CONSTITUTION
CONCERNING THE POSITION OF SECRETARY OF INTERNATIONAL AND
MULTICULTURAL CONCERNS (SIMC)
WHEREAS, the position of Secretary of International and Multicultural Concerns is presently an appointed, non-voting, advisor to the LSM-USA national council, and
WHEREAS, the non-voting nature of this position has handicapped its voice, as one truly has no voice without a vote, and
WHEREAS, difficult issues of diversity must continue to be addressed by we the members of LSM-USA, and
WHEREAS, these students need to be part of the decision making process of LSM-USA, because their input is crucial to understanding diverse problems of race relations, international tensions, and multicultural issues, and
WHEREAS, students of color and students whose first language is other than English have diverse ideas, values, and viewpoints on issues that must be heard for this movement to address these important issues from many perspectives, and
WHEREAS, we members of LSM-USA realize that the position of SIMC elected by the students and guaranteed for a student of color or of a student whose first language is other than English, would give the movement a clear voice on issues of multiculturalism and international concerns, and
THEREFORE, be it amended that the Article 6, Section B of the LSMUSA Constitution include: "3. The Secretary of International and Multicultural Concerns, a guaranteed, elected position of a student of color or of a student whose first language is other than English, shall establish and maintain LSM-USA's ties to other national and international student Christian networks and groups, as well as promote participation and representation of international and multicultural students at local, regional, and national levels through the coordination of the regional SIMC's; and promote a broader understanding and awareness of multicultural issues and concerns facing LSM-USA." This will take affect at the 1993-1994 National Gathering.
