1990 Approved Resolution #5 (90-5)
RESOLUTION: DIPLOMACY NOT WAR IN THE PERSIAN GULF

WHEREAS, as Christians we are called to be peacemakers and workers for justice; and

WHEREAS, war in the Gulf would result in thousands of deaths, not only

of Americans, but also of Iraqis, military and civilian, women and children as well'; and

WHEREAS, economic sanctions together with diplomatic negotiations have the potential to provide justice and peace in the region2;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that LSM-USA at its National Gathering instruct the President of LSMUSA to send a letter, together with a copy of this resolution, to the President of the United States and to the majority and minority leaders of both Houses of Congress. This letter shall exhort the leaders of the United States to patiently wait for sanctions to work and proceed to work for peace and justice through diplomatic negotiations in the Gulf crisis; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the members of LSM-USA pledge to seek a clearer understanding of the issues, to act in faith, and to encourage others to do the same.
