            These last two resolutions were not voted on by the assembly due to lack of time.  As we have done in the past, they are included in the post assembly packet for you information.  They do not necessarily represent the opinions of the assembly.  We, the Reference and Counsel committee, encourage the authors to resubmit the legislation for next year.

 

86-I                          Resolution of Support for the Lutheran Volunteer Corps

 

WHEREAS the number of poverty stricken, oppressed, unemployed, in adequately housed and hungry people is steadily increasing, especially in the urban areas of the United States, and

 

WHEREAS the Lutheran Volunteer Corps, a ministry of Luther Place Memorial Church in Washington, D.C., was established in 1979 to recruit and place volunteers for a year of service in social justice organizations within these urban areas, and

 

WHEREAS the Lutheran Volunteer Corps has expanded and now operates in six U.S. cities, including: Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, MD; Wilmington, DE; Chicago, IL; and Milwaukee, WI; and

 

WHEREAS in the seven years of the program’s existence, over 190 Lutheran volunteers (including several active members of the Lutheran Student Movement) have committed a year of service to work for social justice, live in intentional Christian community and explore a simpler lifestyle,

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the president of LSM-USA write a letter to the Lutheran Volunteer Corps, commending them for their actions, and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the members of LSM-USA  be encouraged to consider positions in the Lutheran Volunteer Corps and/or recruit others to do the same.
