RESOLUTION       84-7

 

AFFIRMATION FOR BREAD FOR THE WORLD

 

WHEREAS hunger is a major problem in our world where there are 450 million people who are chronically malnourished and 1 billion people who are undernourished, while the world produces enough food to feed everyone an adequate diet, and

 

WHEREAS there is a major famine in many African nations and Congress has not acted fully in responding to food aid requests and has tied military.  Aid for Central America to food aid for Africa, thus slowing down the bill for food aid in Congress while people starve to death in Africa, and

 

WHEAREAS our country can play a major role in helping to alleviate hunger here in the United States and around the world through our agricultural policies, and

 

WHEREAS we in the United States have a gift of citizenship in country where we can influence the decisions our government makes by writing and calling our members of Congress and by educating ourselves on the problems and causes of hunger, and

 

WHEREAS organizations such as Bread for the World work to charge U. S. public policy as it affect hungry people, (BFW achieves this goal through its 45,000 members writing and calling members of Congress to influence their vote. ),

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Lutheran Student Movement-USA support the efforts of Bread for the World by:

 

1.      encouraging LSM-USA members to join Bread for the World,

2.      educating ourselves on the causes and effects of hunger in our world, and

3.      writing letter throughout the year to members of Congress encouraging him/ her to take actions to alleviate world hunger.

Summary:  Recognizing the major problems of world hunger and the work by Bread for the World  to alleviate this problem, we urge LSM-USA to take an active participation in supporting Bread for the World.
