RESOLUTION   84-2

 

TO SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT TO DIVEST AND DISCOURAGE ANY FUTURE AMERICAN INVESTMENT IN PRESENT SOUTH AFRICA AND TO OPPOSE APARTHEID

 

WHEREAS South Africa is the only country with a legislative system of racism called apartheid, a system by which and the non-whites are denied basic human rights and a say in the government which rules them, and

 

WHEREAS American corporations, American investments and American technology are involved in the maintenance of apartheid, despite their having no power to challenge effectively the rigid laws which deprive the non-white people of basic human rights,

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Lutheran Student Movement-USA go on record as supporting the movement to divest and further to discourage any future American investments in banks and corporations which do business in South Africa, and

 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED THAT the Lutheran Student Movement-USA urge all of its affiliate members to oppose actively and imaginatively any form of racism wherever it occurs and particularly, through their prayers and political activity, to express solidarity with the oppressed people of South Africa.

SUMMARY:   Apartheid has been describe repeatedly as institutionalized sin.  This is because in South Africa, segregation, discrimination and racial classification are enforced by law.  It is therefore submitted that the Lutheran Student Movement-USA join with others in the struggle to stop this from happening by, among other thigs, divesting from South Africa.
