RESOLUTION ON NESTLE BOYCOTT
WHEREAS: Aggressive marketing of infant formula among the poor in both developed and developing countries has been linked to infant malnutrition which may lead to brain damage and other health problems; the resultant loss of infant life continues to scar the global village, and
WHEREAS: Nestle has been the leading marketer of such products despite the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) that such sales tactics be ceased, and
WHEREAS: Nestle has failed to satisfactorily comply with WHO guidelines despite recent (March 1982) publicity-initiated by Nestle- which was aimed at convincing the general public otherwise. ^1
THEREFORE: Be it resolved that members of LSM-USA, in a spirit of love and concern for all God’s people, be encouraged to undertake a commitment towards continued and increasing awareness of the Nestle infant formula issue debate on individual, regional, and national levels. LSM-USA stands with the International Nestle Boycott Committee, the Infant Formula Action Coalition, and other protests groups in their condemnation of Nestlé’s actions in boycotting of Nestlé’s products, and
THEREFORE: Be it further resolved that the New England LSM compile, as completely as possible, a list of Nestle products and subsidiaries to be included in the post—assembly packet, and
THEREFORE: Be it further resolved that LSM-USA support the efforts of individuals to write letters to the President, Congress, Department of Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration, The Nestle Corporation, and any other corporations in affiliation with the Nestle Corporation, or as concerned citizens, inform the American Public by word of mouth, leafleting, and any other form of communication of our concern for the actions of the Nestle Corporation.
