ECUMENTICAL COMMITMENT

  1. Background

At the 1981 LSM Assembly in Colorado, LSM-USA committed itself to actively pursuing a series of joint study conferences between Episcopal and Lutheran students.

However, in committing ourselves to dialogues with one denomination, we have forgotten the Roman Catholics, Orthodox Churches and other Protestant churches whom we are actively in dialogue with on one level or another in the clergy and laity. By tappin these denominations we have find a point of growth and outreach we in LSM-USA have yet to experience. As Paul pointed out to the Corinthians in I Corinthians 12:5, “..there are differences of administration but the same Lord.” Let us seek the Lord through group expression and corporate outreach through the following ideas.

II. Resolved

a.       We are actively pursue all types of ecumenical expression while upholding the Lutheran doctrine which we confess and trying to maintain cost effectiveness.

b.      That this expression can take the forms of dialogue and outreach, especially as LSM participates in the formation of a new National Student Christian Movement through the National Interim Committee (NIC) of the 1981 National Ecumenical Student Conference (NESC).

c.       Said process shall be under the management of the National Council of LSM-USA through a new position called the Secretary of Ecumenical Concerns, which will be the liaison between LSM-USA and the other denominations and serve as an assessor of all ecumenical processes independently of the power of the Secretary of International Concerns, lest the aforementioned officer offers to work cooperatively on a project which will benefit LSM-USA.

d.      The proposed SEC shall be appointed by the National Council in the 1983 Assembly of LSM-USA to represent LSM-USA to the NIC of the 1981 NESC.

e.       The SEC will turn all bills of necessary postage and long distance over to the Executive Council for remuneration if funds are available. The SEC shall submit a semi-annual report to be printed in the national Newsletter on the actions of the position.

f.        After the appointment of the SEC, the National Council will annually evaluate the position of SEC in light of the expected formation of a new Student Christian Movement.
