REGIONAL CONCERN
Background
IN an effort to promote sound theology and to develop our concern for others in the communities which we live (rather than increase the narcissistic tendencies of ourselves and our society), the Lutheran Student Center and LSM-North Dakota State University have become actively involved in encouraging the expression of free and open dialogue within our community concerning pluralism, individuality, freedom of thought, expression and religion, a sense of community and tolerance and compassion for others.
Our interests are values and principles rather than single issues, chosen candidates, or partisan causes. Our long-term goals focus on reducing social tension and polarization, encouraging community participation, fostering understanding among different segments of society, and increasing the level of quality of public dialogue.

Therefore BE IT RESOLVED
That we encourage other local groups or regions of LSM-USA to:
1. participate in organizations that facilitate the open discussion of social and religious issues: such groups as “Friends for the American Way”, which is active in the North Dakota area,
2. attend and/or organize workshops and lectures that would aid in defining and answering questions concerning our religion and the aforementioned issues.

A precedent has been set this year that could allow manipulations of adopted legislation to fit our own need to avoid inconveniences. We recognize the need to change legislation as the issues change, but, we cannot afford to interpret our past legislation loosely, Does LSM-USA’s commitment to the body of Christ allow us to compromise pertinent issues to serve our own needs?
LSM-USA’s tradition has bee among others, one of working for justice and social equality. Christians have a very distinctive role to play because we have the criterion of faith in God and hope whose purpose is that all should be responsible for each other in justice and peace.
Therefore BE IT RESOLVED
1. that LSM-USA should hold to our faith in Christ and keep our past tradition of resolutions on social justice from becoming self-serving.
