81-7 RESOLUTION ON A WORLD PEACE TAX FUND

Background

Conscientions objection is recognized as a legitimate alternative to military participation for those who are morally opposed to war. However, citizens of this country have no viable options when it comes to supporting our nation’s war effort with tax dollars that could well be spent searching for peaceful alternatives to war. Currently, we must either unwillingly support the tools of war or violate the law. The solution to this unjust dilemma is the goal of the National Council for a World Peace Tax Fund: “A law permitting people morally opposed to war to have the military part of out taxes allocated to peace projects.” This goal can come to life this fall, as it will be debated in Congress in the form of the World Peace Tax Fund Act.

Therefore BE IT RESOLVED

1. that LSM-USA endorses the World Peace Tax Fund Act.

2. that LSM-USA urges its members to write their congress persons requesting their support for the World Pace Tax Fund Act. H.R. 4897 and S. 880.

3. that LSM-USA commands the January Seminar co-sponsored by National Lutheran Campus Ministry and LMHE-NYC on peacemaking to be held in New York City January 2-10. (theme: The Cost of Peace- The Cost of War)
