Resolution 79-6
African Refugees
LSM-USA recognizes the crisis facing several African countries, especially Sudan, where many more refugees are coming in to the country than the country can provide for. Through letters and study, LSM-USA hopes to increase awareness within the church of the problems involved and the need for assistance.
Actions Taken in Response
+ LSM-USA President Jeen Alderson sent letters from the assembly to the Presidents of the ALC, LCA, LCMS, AELC, and NCC, informing them of the African refugee problems, and urging them to give attention to the situation.
+ LSM-USA President Jeen Alderson requested that the ALC, LCA, LCMS, AELC, and NCC designate the offering of a specific Sunday of the year to be sent to the Lutheran World Relief. This offering would go to aid refugees in Sudan, Kenya, Djibouti, and Somalia.
+ A task force was formed from the National Council due to lack of time. Addisu Tolesa, supporter of this resolution was informed of this but was unable to provide any assistance.
