79-2    RESOLUTION ON ENERGY CONSERVATION

Background

As Christians concerned with taking seriously the call to be stewards and caretakers of God’s creation, we recognize the importance of being conscious of our use of energy.  This is especially true in this time when we are realizing the finite availability of traditional energy sources.  In July, 1979, the World Council of Chruches recommended that churches throughout the world act in concert in publicizing a “Fuel Pledge” and seek signatures of adherence in support of this pledge.

Resolved

1)      That LSM-USA declares itself in concert with the World Council of Churches in encouraging individuals within the Movement to practice energy conservation.  This will be accomplished by circulating a petition containing the pledge at this year’s National Assembly and encouraging all participants in the Conference to sign that petition.  The Pledge:

I pledge myself to save fuel and electricity at home, at work and at leisure in order to make more energy available for those whose basic needs are not being met.

            2)   That copies of this resolution, along with the final number of signatures, be

sent to the President of the Lutheran Church bodies, to the President of the

United States, and to the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland.

3)      That LSM-USA commissions Rhode Island Lutheran students to compile a

list of energy-saving tips to be included in the post-conference packet.
