            Holden Village – August 23 – 30, 1970

A Statement of Concern

We, as conscientious Christians and members of the Lutheran Student   Movement, are concerned over the announced “doctrinal inquiry” to be initiated       this fall at Concordia Seminary in Saint Louis, Missouri, by the Reverend Doctor             Jacob Preus, president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

WHEREAS we foresee potential problems in the follow areas of concern:

1)      Doctor John Tietjen, president of Concordia Seminary, has publicly stated that he feels that an investigation is unnecessary.

2)      Such an unprecedented inquiry will undoubtedly create a morale problem for all pastors, professors, and the laity of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

3)      The proposed inquiry may severely damage the reputation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and Concordia Seminary as viable, evangelical, Christian institutions.

4)      The conservative-liberal gap within the Synod will surely widen, possibly to the point of schism.

5)      Most importantly, we affirm the right of Lutheran scholars who have pledge themselves to the Lutheran Confessions to interpret the Word of God as the Holy Spirit leads them.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that we encourage our members as well as all Lutherans, particularly those who are associated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, to discuss the implications of the aforementioned areas of concern and, if so inclined, to make their feelings concerning the doctrinal inquiry known to the Synod in writing and in all other ways possible within synodical structure.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we pray for the unity of God’s Church on earth and for respect of differing biblical interpretations in view of the concept of love conveyed unto us by our Lord, Jesus the Christ.

FURTHERMORE, the following members of the Lutheran Student Movement, who are associated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod as well, wish to state that we have confidence in the professors of Concordia Seminary and in the Christian mission of the Seminary.  We also wish to support this resolution in a conscious effort to demonstrate the inner-Lutheran status of the Lutheran Student Movement.
