Recap of this years Breaking Out
This year Breaking Out took place from March 11 - 16 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The theme for the week was "Faith at Work: learning, growing, serving". Sixteen students and two staff took on the tasks of cleaning up the outside of a church once used to house volunteers for disaster relief and working on a house on the beachfront that had been nearly destroyed by the hurricane. We got to experience the physical and emotional devastation first-hand by taking a tour of the area and talking with the local people whose lives have been changed forever. We spent our time in the evenings in discussion with various individuals who work in different contexts with Lutheran Disaster Response. We spent a great deal of time reflecting on our work and talking about where we go from here and how we can take this experience back into our communities. We saw the many ways we can learn, grow and serve both in Ocean Springs and at home. The week was such a success, and everyone had a blast!
